Thompson's label promises "six months on earth and six in Hades" — his words; the anchored text keeps different books. In Apollodorus, Pluto "with the help of Zeus carried her off secretly", and Demeter "went about seeking her all over the earth with torches by night and day" [The Library (Bibliotheca), BOOK I, ch. V]. The division of the goddess's year is the settlement of that grief, and the text's arithmetic is lopsided: Persephone was "compelled to remain a third of every year with Pluto" "and the rest of the time with the gods" [ibid.]. The even split of Thompson's label survives on the same served page, but only in the editor's margin: by another account "Persephone was to divide her time equally between the two regions" — Ovid's and Hyginus's version, Frazer notes [ibid., editor's note]. So one page carries both calendars, the Homeric-Hymn third and the Ovidian half. Either way the shape holds: the goddess is neither rescued nor lost but amortized, her presence paid out on schedule between the worlds — and the clause that binds her is a swallowed pomegranate seed, filed at its own address (C211).

Witnesses: The Library (Bibliotheca), BOOK I, ch. V
