Two loves in one chapter — and then the motif quoted as precedent. Zeus, "turning himself into a tame bull, he mounted her on his back" and swam Europa to Crete: the god as bull, wooing a mortal woman [The Library (Bibliotheca), BOOK III, ch. I]. Pasiphae inverts it: to punish Minos's broken vow, "Poseidon made the animal savage" and "contrived that Pasiphae should conceive a passion for it" [ibid.]. Daedalus engineers the consummation — "He constructed a wooden cow on wheels"; "the bull came and coupled with it, as if it were a real cow" — and the child announces the parentage: "He had the face of a bull, but the rest of him was human" [ibid.]. In Ovid the story has already become an argument: lovesick Iphis, a girl in love with a girl, reaches for Crete's precedent — "the daughter of the Sun loved a bull", who "under the form of a cow, did she couple with the bull", and at least "her paramour was one that might be deceived" [The Metamorphoses of Ovid, Book 9]. Event in Apollodorus, rhetoric in Ovid: by Ovid's day the bull paramour is a measure other passions are ruled against.
